New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off a superfast express to Delhi from his constituency, Varanasi, later this week.
The train -- likely to be named Mahamana Express after Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya - will run between Varanasi and Delhi via Lucknow thrice a week.
The train will cover the 800 km distance in less than 14 hours. The fares will be normal to start with, but will be reviewed after assessing the train's popularity, officials said.
It will also have the new renovated and refurbished coaches which were on display in Bhopal few days ago.
Currently, 21 trains run between Varanasi and Delhi -- these include 2 Rajdhanis, 1 Garib Rath express and 7 other superfast trains. One of the fastest is Swatantrata Express, which covers the distance in 11 hours 50 minutes.
Following PM Modi's win in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014, Varanasi, the oldest city of India, has been named the sister city to Japan's Kyoto.
In September, PM Modi launched the Rs. 45,000-crore Integrated Power Development Scheme there, which aimed to improve power distribution by large scale overhaul of infrastructure.
The city is also considered to have undergone a face-lift following the launch of the Clean India campaign there by the Prime Minister. But today, the Centre and the state government both were pulled by the country's top environmental court, which said the scheme to clean up the Ganga at the holiest city of the Hindus was a "failure".
The judges' comments came after pictures of bodies floating in the river near Varanasi were shown on behalf of a lawyer, who said no action is being taken to stop human and animal corpses from being left in the Ganga.
