New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the UN peacekeeping summit.

Here are the highlights of his speech:
  • PM Modi begins his address at UN Peacekeeping Summit by mentioning Indian soldiers in World War II
  • 1,80,000 Indian troops have participated in UN peacekeeping missions, 48 of the 69 UN peacekeeping missions so far
  • Till date we have trained 800 officers from 82 countries1,80,000 Indian troops have participated in UN peacekeeping operations.
  • More than 24,000 lost their lives and nearly half of that went missing. This legacy of sacrifice is shared by three nations here.
  • Today's peacekeepers are called upon not only to maintain peace and security, but also address a range of challenges.
  • The problems arise to a large extent because Troop Contributing Countries do not have a role in decision-making process.
  • We are pleased that the High-level Independent Panel on Peace Operations has recognised these issues
