Kathmandu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called up newly-elected Nepal Premier KP Oli to congratulate him and said he looked forward to working closely with him, an official release in Kathmandu said.

Mr Modi was the first foreign leader to talk to Nepal's new leader, said a statement issued by the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.

Mr Modi said Mr Oli has been elected in democratic and orderly elections and, conveying his hearty congratulations, said he looked forward to working closely with him, the embassy said.

"The Indian Prime Minister expressed the hope and expectation that Premier Oli will carry all sections of the society along, so that there is peace and stability in the country," the statement said, adding that India was confident that the Nepal government will address "the remaining political issues confronting the country in a spirit of dialogue and reconciliation".

Mr Modi conveyed that the Indian government has always stood for peace, prosperity and progress of Nepal, which is also in India's interest. India will continue to extend all assistance "in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Nepal, for peace, stability and socio-economic development of the country", the statement said.
