New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the untimely demise of Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al-Maktoum, son of Dubai's ruler and elder brother to the emirate's heir apparent.

In his condolence message, Mr Modi said that a "promising public career has been tragically cut short" with his death.

He tweeted:

Sheikh Rashid died of heart attack yesterday. He was 33.

He was the first son of Sheikh Mohammed and his senior wife, Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum. In addition to his role as Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammed is vice-president and prime minister of the UAE.

"In this hour of personal grief, our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and people of UAE. The people of India join their UAE brothers and sisters in mourning this irreparable loss," Mr Modi said.

Mr Modi had undertaken a two-day visit to UAE in August, a first by an Indian prime minister in 34 years to a country that is also home to 2.6 million Indians.
