New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the landmark climate accord in Paris, saying it pointed the world towards a greener future. The historic accord adopted by 195 nations in Paris on Saturday aims to stop global warming by cutting emissions and eliminating greenhouse gas pollution.
"Outcome of Paris agreement has no winners or losers. Climate justice has won & we are all working towards a greener future," PM Modi posted on Twitter.
The deliberations at the climate summit and the agreement reached "demonstrates the collective wisdom" of world leaders to mitigate climate change, he said.
PM Modi attended the crucial climate change conference in Paris for two days during which launched India-mooted International Solar Alliance. The Indian team since had been led by environment minister Prakash Javadekar,
Calling it a "historic moment", Mr Javadekar told NDTV, "It was not easy that all countries will agree to a reasonable ambitious deal".
Asked why India, which had pushed for "common but differential responsibilities", had to make compromises, the minister said, "To achieve big things you need to be accommodating without changing the meaning and thrust of agreement and that is success... We have done everything to maintain the thrust.
Noting that the agreement acknowledges and recognizes the development imperatives of India and other developing countries, Mr Javadekar had earlier said the proposal was "a balanced text" and he was happy that "India's concerns have been taken care of".
Mr Javadekar, however also said at the plenary session that the agreement could have been more ambitious as the actions of developed nations are "far below" than their historical responsibilities and fair shares.
"The actions of developed countries are far below their historical responsibilities and fair shares. We have in the spirit of compromise agreed on a number of phrases in the agreement," he said.
