PM Narendra Modi to Inaugurate Delhi Economics Conclave Today

The theme of the Delhi Economic Conclave this year is Realising Indias JAM (Jan-Dhan Aadhar Mobile) Vision.

New Delhi: The Delhi Economics Conclave (DEC), organised by the finance ministry, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, an official statement said.

"The theme of the DEC this year is 'Realising India's JAM (Jan-Dhan Aadhar Mobile) Vision," a finance ministry statement said.

The conclave will also be attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Kerala, Niti Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya and former Unique ID authority chairman Nandan Nilekani, it added.

Senior officials attending the conference will include Cabinet Secretary Pradeep Sinha, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, and Food and Public Distribution Secretary Vrinda Sarup.

Among the foreign dignitaries and economists slated to attend the meet will be Luis Henrique Paiva, former head of Brazil's successful cash transfer scheme Bolsa Familia, Brian Forde of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Paul Niehaus of the University of San Diego in the US.

The day-long discussions through various sessions, will focus on topics as varied as the Indian and international experience in cash transfers, benefits and risks of biometric authentication, beneficiaries' experiences with technology-based targeting, financial inclusion, perspective of the states and the vision for JAM's future.

Over 190 million accounts have been opened under the Jan Dhan financial inclusion scheme, with around 38 per cent of these being zero-balance accounts.

The government is looking to extend the cash transfers scheme to other programmes of subsidy as well.
