New Delhi:
The Congress today stood solidly behind the prime minister and said the decision to reshuffle the Cabinet, yet again, has been taken in the interest of the nation and for good governance.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "It is the exclusive discretion of the Prime Minister; several factors have to be taken into account. If we are a political force to reckon with, we know the rules of governance...rest assured that these decisions are well thought out."
Mr Singhvi also fielded questions on the unhappiness expressed by Gurudas Kamat.
The Minister of State was assigned to independent charge of Drinking Water and Sanitation, but chose to skip the pomp and ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan last evening, because he was allegedly upset about not being given Cabinet rank.
"Let me make it clear that this is a matter that has been looked into and decided between Government and the person concerned. He has clarified that he has not said anything about the party. But I would like to add that these things should not happen," said Mr Singhvi.
After his new Cabinet was formalised last evening, Prime Minister said he hopes that the reshuffle "is the last before we go to the polls, though there is no finality in life." If his coalition lasts its term, general elections will be held in 2014.
