Dehradun: A body of a male tiger, riddled with bullet wounds, was found in Bana Khera forest near the Corbett National Park on Sunday.
Though park officials claim the death was a result of a territorial fight between two tigers, wild life activists refuse to accept the explanation saying reports bullet wounds on the tiger's body point toward some foul-play.
In June, bodies of three tigers were discovered in the jungles of the Tarai region. Another body of a tiger was recovered from the Kishanganj Sanctuary of the Dudhwa National Park in the Lakhimpur Kheri district.
According to latest census, there are only 1706 tigers left in the country, with 235 tigers in Uttarakhand alone - news welcomed by wildlife enthusiasts.
The forest department has increased surveillance across tiger reserves in the area after several cases of tiger poaching came to light.
With the discovery of the body yesterday, the tally of tiger deaths in and around the Corbett region has reached 10 for this year and has raised fresh concerns on poaching in the area and highlighted the gaps in conservation efforts.
