Patna:

In Jharkhand, a policeman in uniform and three others brutally assaulted a mentally disturbed youth inside the Dumka Hospital premises.

Ramvilas, in his 20s, had injured himself in a fight and the police brought him to the hospital for treatment. According to the police, he turned violent due to which they had to resort to violent means in order to control him.

Two policemen, deputed to guard Ram Vilas Thakur, pinned him down, kicked and beat him with batons before tying his limbs to bring him under control, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar said after preliminary investigation.

The man, who was under treatment for injuries, suffered a fresh gash in his head following the beating, Kumar said.

Terming him as 'mentally retarded', Kumar said Thakur snatched a pair of scissors and stabbed his mother Katki Devi in her stomach at the Dumka Sadar hospital on Saturday morning, forcing the two policemen to swing into action.

The doctors immediately treated Devi, who is out of danger, Dr Subham Murmu said. But Devi left the hospital without permission of the doctors, he added.

Thakur and one Ravindra Mahato came to blows on Friday night at Dumgaon village near Dumka, injuring each other, the DSP said.

The police picked them up and admitted them to hospital for treatment. The two policemen were posted to guard them there.
