Ferozepur, Punjab: A video shot by an onlooker in Ferozepur district of Punjab brings to light police brutality once again. The purported video shows a man - Jaswant Singh screaming for help even as policemen continue to thrash him in the Kulgadi Police station. Also seen in the video are senior police officers including the Station House Officer watching as the man is beaten with sticks inside the police station.
Ironically Mr Singh neither had any case registered against him nor was he a listed criminal. After beating him up, the police let him off without so much as even registering a complaint against him.
Sources in the police say it was a family property dispute and some members of the family connived with the policemen to beat him up, hoping he would give up his share. Mr Singh, who lives in Sirsa, had arrived in his village to demand his share of the property from his father. It is alleged that his father, who did not want to give Mr Singh any share, hatched the plan to ensure he does not make any demands.
The Senior Superintendent of Police, when shown the video, expressed regret and has promised action against the erring officers.
