Police Officer Suspended After Alleged Assault On Samajwadi Party Worker
Gaurav Yadav, a secretary with the local Samajwadi Party unit in Gorakhpur, was picked up by the police after a gang war.
Gorakhpur: A senior police officer  of Gorakhpur,  Anant Dev,  has been suspended after an alleged police assault on a Samajwadi Party worker. The suspension, police sources say, was ordered by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav himself.

Gaurav Yadav, a secretary with the local Samajwadi Party unit, was picked up by the police yesterday after a gang war in which he was allegedly involved. The trouble was over a disputed plot of land.

The police, who arrived on the scene after about 30 minutes, picked up two people from each side, including Mr Yadav.

"Three police inspectors first insulted my uncle and then started abusing me too. They then bought me and my uncle to the police station, where they brutally assaulted me with lathis and boots and also injured my private parts. All this time, they kept on taunting me to use my political connections to save myself," Mr Yadav told the media today.

Mr Dev had ordered the suspension of three inspector-level officers after the incident, but today, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said Mr Dev needs to take the blame.

Mr Dev is reputed to be a tough officer and an "encounter specialist". Police sources, however, say there had been regular complaints of high handedness by the police from Gorakhpur under his charge, and that the latest incident is a culmination of various incidents.
