New Delhi:
This one is a typical "can happen in Uttar Pradesh only". The district police in UP's Ghaziabad has messed up terribly and processed a verification form for Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi - believe it or not - as a driver with a Ghaziabad address.
The matter came to light during the police verification drive in a residential colony in Indirapuram, which is close to Delhi. The forms for domestic helps, drivers and other workers were being checked for whether those claiming to live there were residents or not. Then, one form was found with Mr Gandhi's picture on it. The address provided was that of a resident of the society, Arun Sharma.
The father's name on the form was late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the mentioned profession was politics, marital status unmarried and the permanent address was of Tughlak Lane in Delhi.
The form was duly stamped by the Ghaziabad Police. The society's Resident Welfare Association contacted the police and a complaint was lodged with the Senior Superintendent of Police too. Now the police are left wondering how this could have happened.
A senior official said police verification is routine business. Thousands of requests from people hiring staff are received each month. Once scrutinised for criminal record, the forms submitted by new employees (its mandatory by law) are sent to the current address mentioned in the employee's form for confirmation. This process was started after a series of crimes by domestic helps and other staff.
In this case the address provided was of Mr Sharma and the employee whose verification at that address wad to be done was the Gandhi scion who planned to work as a driver/assistant.
There are red faces in the Ghaziabad police over the issue as the police officer who handled the application at the time of submission should have rejected it. The very fact that it was processed and sent to the place of residence for verification indicates how poor the scrutiny of applications is.
Top cops refused to speak on record but they say this looks like a prank. However, investigation is on to ascertain who filed the application. And the police are contemplating lodging a case against those who handled the application and those who filed it.
