Policeman Killed In Attack On National Conference Leader In Kashmir

Today's attack was the third terror attack in Kashmir in three days.

Srinagar: A policeman was killed and a woman injured in south Kashmir's Pulwama on Wednesday evening after terrorists targeted a National Conference leader. Ghulam Mohiudin Mir, a former legislator, escaped unharmed in the attack.

The terrorists, however, fled the spot and took away the rifle of the killed policeman. Police says they have launched a manhunt to track down the attackers.

Official sources say terrorists opened fire when Mr Mir was attending a marriage ceremony in the area. A police constable, Reyaz Ahmad, deployed for the protection of the National Conference leader was killed.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing and termed the attack an inhuman act.

"It is highly unfortunate and heartrending that we continue to lose precious lives to senseless violence which has only aggravated the sufferings of the people over the years," Ms Mufti said in statement.

"The attackers have no respect for human lives and are only adding to the tragedies of the ill-fated families," she added.

This is the third terror attack in the last three days in Kashmir. On Monday, three policemen were killed in two separate attacks in Srinagar.

Police in Srinagar have detained at least a dozen people for questioning in connection with attacks on the police on Monday. Sources say some local boys who have joined terrorism in the last one month may well be behind twin attacks.
