Politics of Hatred Must Stop: Rahul Gandhi on Saharanpur Clashes

New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has said that he is deeply saddened to hear about the clashes in Saharanpur in which two people have died and 19 others have been injured.

"I am deeply saddened to hear of clashes in Saharanpur. Violence, divisiveness and hatred have no place in our country. This politics of hatred must end. I appeal to every one to remain calm and refrain from fanning communal passions," Mr Gandhi said in a statement today.

The clashes broke out in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh between two groups allegedly over construction on a disputed property. According to reports, many shops and vehicles were vandalised and set on fire as the two groups confronted each other. Several policemen were among those injured as the protesters clashed and pelted stones at each other. There were also reports of firing.

Curfew has been imposed in Saharanpur that is located nearly 570 kilometres from state capital Lucknow.

Senior police officials rushed to the scene of clashes to bring the situation under control.

There's massive security deployment in the area now. Personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) have reportedly also been called in.

According to news agency IANS, traffic on the national highway connecting Ambala was thrown out of gear as the protesters went on the rampage.
