With Congress veteran Jagdish Tytler, who got a clean chit by CBI in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, pitted against a BJP stalwart marking his return to politics after 12 years, the Lok Sabha contest in the newly carved north-east Delhi constituency promises to be a pot boiler.
The presence of a Muslim candidate fielded by Mayawati's BSP, hoping to spoil many a calculation in a constituency that has perhaps the largest number of Muslims as against any other Delhi seat, has made the triangular contest even more interesting.
With his previous constituency Sadar Bazaar scrapped and most of it merged with the Chandni Chowk seat after the delimitation process, Congress candidate and three-time MP Jagdish Tytler, who recently got a clean chit from the CBI for the second time on the 1984 riots, hopes to keep his winning momentum with this new constituency.
But BJP's two-time MP B L Sharma, who had earlier defeated Congress stalwarts like H K L Bhagat and Deep Chand Bandhu in 1991 and 1996 by impressive margins, hopes to complete his return to politics with a landmark win.
The Northeast parliamentary constituency has been carved out from the erstwhile East Delhi seat -- home to the predominantly unauthorised colonies that witnessed a lot of upsurge during the sealing process.
