Poor rainfall worries Assam farmers

Poor rainfall worries Assam farmers
Chokor Dou: Though monsoon arrived in Assam on time, it's been erratic and weak which is unusual. Farmers are giving up hope, power supply has been hit and taps are running dry.

A monsoon shower which lasted less than 10 minutes - this is how it has been ever since the Meteorological Department announced the arrival of monsoon on 25th of May.

Parched fields in Kamrup have forced some farmers to selling firewood. Others are out of work.

Farmers instead of being in paddy fields and tilling their land are sitting at home and playing cards, worried though, that further delay of rainfall will destroy their crop.

We are waiting for the rains," a farmer says.

"We are farmers, we don't have any other skills," said another.

Not just farmland, in residential areas people are going for days without water.

Power supply has been severely hit as well.

"If we get regular flow of water than load shedding won't happen," said Narayan Rajbonshi, Employee, Assam state electricity board.

All in all, it's a grim situation with people hoping for the rainbows.
