Poor Will Suffer If Aadhaar Made Mandatory Unilaterally: Mamata Banerjee
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee raised the issue of privacy concerning Aadhaar.
New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has hit out at the centre for making Aadhaar mandatory for opening bank accounts and carrying out financial transactions above Rs 50,000. Ms Banerjee, who also heads the Trinamool Congress, in a series of tweets claimed that the poor and marginalised section of society will be the "worst sufferers" of the centre's move.

"The poorest of the poor, the marginalised people will be the worst sufferers if Aadhaar is made mandatory unilaterally," Ms Banerjee posted on Twitter.

Ms Banerjee also highlighted the various issues concerning individual privacy associated with Aadhaar and advised the centre not make it mandatory "before 100 per cent coverage is achieved".

In March, Mamata Banerjee had strongly objected to the centre's decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for the mid-day meal scheme in schools. The women's wing of the Trinamool Congress had then protested on the streets of Kolkata and the party's lawmakers also raised the issue in parliament.

The Revenue Department, in its notification today, asked existing bank account holders to furnish their Aadhaar or UIDAI number by December 31, failing which the account would cease to operate. The notification has also made it mandatory for individuals, companies and partnership firms to quote Aadhaar , along with PAN or Form 60, for all financial transactions over Rs 50,000.

The Centre, in its Budget for 2017, mandated the seeding of Aadhaar with PAN, in order to curb individuals using PAN cards to evade taxes.
