Furious over frequent power cuts, residents in Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary constituency on Monday staged demonstrations and hurled bricks damaging a PAC vehicle, prompting police to use force to restore calm.
A PAC jawan was injured when protesters, who also blocked the national highway to protest prolonged power cuts, threw stones at police, Additional Suprerintendent of Police Ashok Shukla said.
PAC jawans were deployed soon after the residents, led by Congress and other political leaders, hit the streets.
The protesters, which included traders and functionaries of the bar association, put up barriers on the roads demanding adequate power supply, Shukla said.
They alleged they were getting electricity for only six to eight hours in a day.
All schools and colleges here had been shut in the wake of ongoing agitation.
