Power tariff to go up steeply in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission on Friday approved new power tariff effecting a significant hike for domestic, commercial and rural consumers, but industry has been spared from any hike.

For rural domestic consumers having unmetered supply, the fixed charge has been hiked from Rs 125 per connection in a month to Rs 180 per month.

In cases of metered supply, the fixed charge has been hiked from Rs 15 per kilowatt per month to Rs 50 per month, while energy charge has been increased from Re 1 per unit to Rs 2.2 per unit, according to official sources.

For urban domestic consumers, the fixed charge has been hiked from Rs 65 per KW per month to Rs 75 a month. Energy charges would be Rs 4 per unit instead of existing Rs 3.45 per unit for power consumption of up to 200 units per month.

Consumption between 201 units and 500 units would incur an energy charge of Rs 4.5 per unit against the present Rs 3.8 per unit.

A new slab has been created for consumers having power consumption of above 500 units and they would be charged at the rate of Rs 5 per unit.

Energy charges have also been hiked by almost 11 per cent for life-line consumers having contracted load of 1 KW.

Among commercial consumers getting power as per rural schedule for unmetered supply, the fixed charge has been hiked from Rs 200 per connection per month to Rs 300 per connection per month.

In metered category, the fixed charge has been raised to Rs 65 per KW per month from Rs 50 per month and energy charge to Rs 2.5 per unit from Rs 1.9 per unit.

For urban commercial consumers, energy charge for consumption of up to 300 units per month has been hiked to Rs 6 per unit in place of Rs 5.75 per unit. For above 300 units in a month, it would be Rs 6.5 per unit.

Tariff has also been hiked for private tubewells and pumping sets for irrigation purposes.

In case of consumers getting unmetered supply as per rural schedule, fixed charge would be Rs 100 per BHP per month in place of Rs 75 per BHP per month.

In the case of metered supply, the fixed charge would be Rs 30 per BHP per month in place of Rs 15 BHP per month and energy charge would be Re 1 per unit in place of 75 paise per unit.

For consumers getting supply as per urban schedule, the fixed charge would be Rs 55 per BHP per month in place of Rs 30 per BHP per month and fixed charge would be Rs 4 per unit in place of Rs 2 per unit.

Chairman of UP Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad Avadhesh Kumar Verma alleged that hefty hike in tariff has proved that the Commission took the anti-people decision under pressure of the state government.
