New Delhi: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is likely to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi today in the backdrop of controversy over a note by his ministry on 2G scam that has kicked up a political storm here with the opposition demanding Home Minister P Chidambaram's resignation.
Sources said Mukherjee has sought an appointment with Gandhi and could be meeting her anytime after 6 PM. Mukherjee, who was in Washington for IMF and World Bank meetings, had to advance his departure from there for New York for the unscheduled meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The controversial note, prepared by a Finance Ministry official, had suggested that the 2G scam could have been averted had the Finance Ministry then headed by Chidambaram insisted on the auction route instead of the 2001 price for allotment of spectrum.
After his meeting with the Prime Minister yesterday in New York, Mukherjee had called Chidambaram "our valued colleague" but made it clear that he would comment on the issue only after he talks to the Home Minister, Law Minister Salman Khurshid and other party leaders.
Mukherjee had said that he had to go through all the papers and find out what is the legal implication.
