Pranab Mukherjee: Need more time to resolve Telangana crisis

New Delhi:: In the wake of the ongoing general strike in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, Congress top brass held hectic consultations on the statehood issue late last night in Delhi. Today, Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narasimhan's will meet with Central leaders to brief them about the situation in the state.

Yesterday, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, the main trouble-shooter of the government, first held separate meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Later, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Defence Minister AK Antony and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also in charge of Andhra Pradesh for the Congress, met Mukherjee to discuss the issue.

After the meeting ended, the Finance Minister told reporters that discussions were "going on" and the government "needs time" to resolve the crisis over the demand for separate statehood for Telangana. However, speaking to NDTV earlier this week, the minister had said the creation of Telangana "will create more problems." (Watch).

Governor Narasimhan is expected to meet Dr Singh and Chidambaram during his visit. He is also expected to present a report on the ground situation in the state, particularly in the Telangana region, in the light of the ongoing general strike that has crippled normal life for almost a month now.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, who has also prepared a report on the Telangana crisis after talks with party leaders of all three regions of the state, had met Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday to brief her about the issue. (With PTI Inputs)
