Pray for Narendra Modi's long life, may he not be PM, says Nitish Kumar's party

Pray for Narendra Modi's long life, may he not be PM, says Nitish Kumar's party

Patna/Ahmedabad: On his 63rd birthday, Narendra Modi visited his mother for her blessings, after which he said he wanted to thank people from across the world for their greetings.

Among those who wished him, was KC Tyagi of the Janata Dal United. "Heartiest wishes on his birthday, we wish for his long-life and also pray that he doesn't become the PM of this nation." (Who said what)

Though the Janata Dal United (JDU) truncated its 17-year partnership with the BJP in June, both parties are struggling to bury the hatchet.

Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar and one of the JDU's top leaders, has said that the BJP's decision to pick Mr Modi as its candidate for prime minister is a self-destructive one.

For months before Mr Kumar divorced the BJP -they were in the midst of a second term in co-governing Bihar - the chief minister had finessed the art of deriding Mr Modi without naming him. He warned over and over that if the BJP picked Mr Modi for PM, his party would exit the alliance because it cannot support a "divisive leader."

Mr Modi - now in his fourth term as chief minister of Gujarat - is accused by detractors of not doing enough to stop communal violence that tore through his state in 2002, leaving hundreds of Muslims dead.

In June, he was appointed campaign-in-charge for the BJP. Mr Kumar said he wasn't going to wait around for the BJP to give Mr Modi the ultimate promotion- the chance to run for the country's top job.

The BJP, which was forced to exit the Bihar government, alleges that the JDU based its divorce on a misguided attempt to ingratiate itself with the Muslim voters of Bihar.
