Three prisoners - two of them nationals of Saudi Arabia - died when a fight broke out at a jail in Manipur's Imphal before dawn today.
"Two Saudi prisoners attacked and killed another inmate who had been lodged in the same cell," said P Doungel, the chief of state's prisons. "Hearing about the incident, the other inmates attacked and killed the two foreigners."
At least two prison guards and one official were injured when they tried to intervene.
The Saudi nationals - Sushak Yusuf Ahmed and Abdul Salam - were facing trial for allegedly entering India without valid travel documents. They had been arrested in 2013.
The man they allegedly killed has been identified as Thangmilian Zou, a tribal from Manipur's Churachandpur district.
