Presidential Election 2022 Highlights: Droupadi Murmu, Yashwant Sinha's Face Off

Presidential Election: Elections to choose the 15th President of India are being held today -- a race between NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu and the opposition's Yashwant Sinha. The counting of votes will be held on July 21 and the new President will take oath on July 25.

The President is elected by the members of the Electoral College

New Delhi:

Elections to choose the 15th President of India are being held today -- a race between NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu and the opposition's Yashwant Sinha

The counting of votes will be held on July 21 and the new President will take oath on July 25, under the schedule announced by the Election Commission.

The President is elected by the members of the Electoral College, comprising elected members of both houses of Parliament and legislative assemblies of all states as well as the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Ballot boxes to start arriving in Delhi tonight, most will be in by Tuesday noon
The ballot boxes used for Monday's presidential election will start reaching the national capital from tonight and a majority of them would be at the Parliament House by Tuesday noon, officials said.

The ballot box from the Delhi Legislative Assembly as well as those from at least four neighbouring states would reach the strong room of Parliament House tonight itself.

An Election Commission functionary said the ballot boxes from state capitals which have direct early morning flights for Delhi would reach here by Tuesday noon.

The ballot boxes from states which do not have direct flights will arrive by Tuesday evening.

58 of 60 Tripura MLAs cast vote
 Out of the total 60 MLAs of Tripura, 58 cast their vote in the Presidential election here on Monday, Speaker Ratan Chakraborty said.

A legislator of the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the ruling BJP-led coalition in the state, and a CPI(M) MLA who was ailing did not exercise their franchise here, he said.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, his deputy Jishnu Dev Verma, leader of opposition Manik Sarkar and others cast their vote in the lobby of the Assembly.

All 36 lawmakers of the BJP and seven out of the eight IPFT legislators voted in the polling which ended at 5 pm.

NCP MLA in Jharkhand votes for Droupadi Murmu, says "went by conscience call"
NCP MLA Kamlesh Singh on Monday took many in the political circle by surprise as he announced that he has voted for NDA presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu.

Ms Murmu, an ex-governor of Jharkhand, is up against former Hazaribag MP Yashwant Sinha, the joint candidate of non-BJP parties, including the Congress, the TMC and the NCP.

Mr Singh said he went by his "conscience call" while exercising his franchise.

According to Assembly sources, 50 of the state's 81 legislators cast their votes for the presidential elections in the Tribunal Hall of the House till 1 pm.

As many as 28 legislators of the NDA, including two of the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) Party, reached the Assembly premises in a bus to exercise their franchise.

Even as the election is underway with 776 Members of Parliament and 4,033 MLAs voting to elect the 15th President of India, an Akali Dal MLA has broken away from the party's decision to back NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu.

Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali in a Facebook video announced that he is boycotting the election and will not vote for either Droupadi Murmu or Yashwant Sinha, the presidential candidates.

Mulayam Singh given fresh ballot after first voting attempt fails

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav were issued fresh ballots after they could not cast their votes properly in the first attempt in the presidential poll being held Monday.

Mr Yadav arrived in Parliament in a wheelchair, but faltered while casting his vote, and was given another chance to do so, sources said.

Voted according to my conscience, says Haryana Congress MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi

Haryana Congress MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi, who cross-voted in last month's Rajya Sabha polls, on Monday said he has voted according to his conscience in the presidential election too.

Indicating that he had supported NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu rather than the opposition's Yashwant Sinha, Bishnoi said in Delhi, "Like in Rajya Sabha, I have cast my vote in this election too as per my conscience".

When reporters asked about his future course of action, he said, "I will reveal that soon." Before the Rajya Sabha polls too, Bishnoi, the younger son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal, had said he would go by his conscience.

Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 PM today amid voting for Presidential Poll
Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 2 PM on Monday as the voting for the Presidential election is taking place on Parliament premises.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said the House proceedings will resume afterwards.

Prior to this adjournment, Om Birla paid tributes to former United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and former Kenya President Mwai Kibaki. Birla also paid tribute to former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe during the session.
