New Delhi:
The sharp rise in food prices has become a major issue for the Left and all Opposition parties. While the Prime Minister met an angry lot of chief ministers to discuss the price issue, the Left held nationwide demonstrations and protests on Thursday.
During the protests thousands courted arrest, including the biggest leaders of the party.
A month ago the Left stood up for the government in Parliament supporting the Women's Reservation Bill, now they are making it clear that they are against government's Food Security Bill, and against the proposed fuel price hike, to be discussed in the next Parliament session.
They are discussing what the further course of action should be, with parties like the Samajwadi Party, and Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) - those unhappy with the Women's Reservation Bill.
"We will meet, see and decide together what should be our strategy against the fuel price hike," CPM leader Prakash Karat said.
But according to Union minister Ambika Soni, "There is a downward trend in prices".
The protests were planned to coincide with the Prime Minister's meeting with Chief Ministers of 10 major states and senior Cabinet ministers. On the agenda was Inflation that has soared to 9.89 per cent during February and is expected to cross the double-digit mark in March.
