New Delhi: Santosh Singh, the main accused in the rape and murder of 23-year-old law student Priyadarshini Mattoo in 1996, is a lawyer and the son of IPS officer, JP Singh. He studied law in the same college as Priyadarshini.
Santosh had been accused of stalking and harassing Priyadarshini. Her family had filed FIRs against Santosh.
He was acquitted by a lower court in 1999. The decision led to a huge public outcry and after an intense media campaign, the CBI appealed against the judgement in the Delhi High Court. The High Court then reversed the order and awarded death sentence to Santosh for rape and murder of Priyadarshini.
