New Delhi:
The New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi has finally left Gurgaon. The train had been unable to move from Heli Mandi in Pataudi near Gurgaon, where it was held up by angry villagers after seven people were run over by the train this morning.
The seven people were crossing the tracks between Pataudi and Jatauli station, without noticing the approaching Shatabdi, after a goods train had just passed the area.
"Due to the impact, the engine of the train failed and the locomotive came to a halt," CPRO, Northern Railways, Anant Swaroop said.
Passengers said about a 1000 villagers had surrounded the train and protested for hours on the tracks; several other trains had been delayed. The train guard, the driver and the stationmaster had fled and officials reached the spot quite late. No policeman could be seen around either, they said.
Latest reports say the situation has returned to normal now.
The families of the victims will receive a compensation of 5 lakh rupees, and have been assured a government job as well.
In Amritsar, meanwhile, the Amritsar Shatabdi to New Delhi has not moved because of a bandh called by the Dal Khalsa and SAD Amritsar (Mann group). They have been demanding "justice" for 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims
The train was supposed to leave Amritsar station at 5:10 am and reach New Delhi at 11:15 am, but it is still standing in Amritsar
The Sachkhand Express and the Super Express have also been stopped at Amritsar by the groups. The incident takes place on a day when the prime minister is in Punjab, where he will attend a convocation at Chandigarh later on Tuesday.
