Protests in Bengal Medical College After Student Found Dead in Hostel Room

The girl was found hanging from a fan in her hostel room

Kolkata:

A 19-year-old medical student in West Bengal allegedly committed suicide on Thursday night.

The girl, a first year student of the Bidhannagar paramedical college in Durgapur, was found hanging from a fan in her hostel room.

There were angry protests today by her classmates and colleagues, who allege that the college authorities did not act fast enough to save the teenager.

Students accused hostel officials of negligence and ransacked parts of the college. They alleged that there was no security at the hostel and officials were not present at night, so no one was available to take the girl to the hospital.

"We could not save her despite our best because of the negligence of the management and extreme delay in taking medical actions," said Subhangshu Goswami, one of the protesting students.

The girl, who was in the nutrition department, had reportedly called one of her batch-mates at around 9:30 pm, but she missed her call, said students.

Her hostel mates say they came to know about her death on hearing screams from students who saw the body. The girl's friends took her to the hospital where she was declared dead.

Police have found three cellphones that belonged to the girl and suspect a love affair gone wrong may be the reason for the alleged suicide.
