Puducherry:
Puducherry on Thursday celebrated the 59 th De Facto Merger day with Chief Minister N Rangasamy hoisting the national flag at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
He also honoured freedom fighters on the occasion. Speaker V Sabapathy and a large number of freedom fighters were present for the occassion.
Puducherry and its outlying regions of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam merged de facto with Indian on November 1, 1954 in the wake of a referendum held on October 18, 1954 in the neighbouring Kizhoor village.
After ascertaining the wishes of the people that Puducherry should be liberated, the then French administration inked a Treaty of Cession with Indian Union transferring de facto the four regions effecting their merger with Indian Union.
