Pune:
As medical costs shoot up, treatment is becoming more and more unaffordable for the poor. But some groups have come together to help. Like this music band set up by Pune's top doctors to raise money for the poor.
Getting an appointment with Dr Dasmit Singh, one of Pune's top paediatric surgeons comes only after a long wait...But you can catch him practising in his orchestra set up by doctors to raise money for charity.
"Our music group got together and we thought while we are doing it, why not raise funds and use them for poor patients," said Dr Dasmit Singh, Paediatric Surgeon, Jehangir Hospital.
The band - "Lets Act" was formed by a group of 25 doctors. It has managed to raise Rs 50 lakh in ten years.
"Whatever we are doing is probably very meagre, but yes, cost has become a major problem in treatment for the common man and support from any side is welcome," said Dr Jagdish Hiremath, Cardiologist, Jehangir Hospital.
This may be for a charity show but the doctors don't cut corners. With just two months left for the performance, they are rehearsing upto three hours a day usually late at night.
"Once we finish our surgery and everything, we gather in the night and start practicing till the wee hours in the morning," said Dr Shekhar Kulkarni, Breast Surgeon, Sasoon Hospital.
Medicine was always considered a noble profession and some doctors in Pune not just believe in it but are also practicing the same in trying to heal the miseries of the poor and needy patients with music.
