Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh will lead the party in burning the effigy of 'Chitta Ravana'.
Amarinder Singh, the former chief minister of Punjab, said that he will burn an effigy of 'Chitta Ravana' on October 18 when PM Modi visits Ludhiana, to register Congress' protest against the drug menace in the state.
Chitta or white is a colloquial reference to powdered drugs such as heroin. Mr Singh said that the Chitta Ravana "will go up in flames" as soon as PM Modi begins addressing a gathering of industrialists.
PM Modi is scheduled to attend an event organised by the ministry for micro, small and medium enterprises where he will give national awards to outstanding firms.
"Let Modi also get a taste of how Punjab is burning under the Akali rule," Mr Singh said, adding that he will personally set fire to the effigy and challenged anyone to try and stop him.
He said Congress party workers will burn similar effigies in all 117 assembly constituencies of Punjab.
Describing the '
Chitta Ravana' as a "demonic symbol" of the Badal government's "evil dispensation", the Congress leader said his party would fight the drug menace in the state till it's completely wiped out.
Punjab Congress on Saturday lifted a three-day
dharna or sit in outside Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's residence after his government transferred Ludhiana Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaswinder Singh.
"Congress would show no let-up in its campaign against the drugs menace in the state," All India Congress Committee Secretary Harish Choudhary told party workers before calling off the
dharna.
Several Congress legislators and workers had been camping outside Chief Minister's Parkash Singh Badal's residence in Chandigarh since Thursday, demanding action against senior Ludhiana police officers and Akali workers for an alleged attack on Congress workers on Dussehra eve over the '
Chitta Ravana' issue.
