An assistant sub-inspector of the Punjab Police was shot dead by unidentified people on the Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway yesterday night.
According to reports, Gurdev Singh, who was part of a highway patrol team, signalled a car to stop for routine checking at around midnight on Sunday. When the car didn't stop and sped away, Mr Singh and other policemen gave it a chase.
Unidentified people in the car then allegedly started shooting at the cops. A bullet hit Mr Singh in the chest, and he died on the spot, according to reports.
There were four to five men in the car, say the police.
