Punjab Gau Raksha Dal Chief Arrested From UP

Satish Kumar was arrested by Patiala police in Uttar Pradesh last night

Patiala: Satish Kumar, head of the Punjab unit of the self-styled cow protection group Gau Raksha Dal was arrested by Patiala police in Uttar Pradesh last night. Sources said he was arrested from Vrindavan where he was hiding.

Satish was on the run after an FIR or first information report was filed against him on the basis of a video on social media that showed his men thrashing the driver of a truck carrying cows.

Satish and two of his aides were booked for rioting, extortion, sodomy and other charges earlier this month. In a statement before a magistrate in Rajpura, the driver alleged that he was also abducted and sodomised by Satish's men.

The videos have been on social media for months now, but the police action came after PM Modi asked states to prepare a dossier of so-called Gau Rakshaks or cow protectors.

"70-80% will be those who indulge in anti-social activities and try to hide their sins by pretending to be Gau Rakshaks," he said at a government event in Delhi earlier this month.

Another victim had told police last week that he was detained by the self-styled cow vigilantes, robbed and tortured. He also alleged that he was sodomised by Satish.

Satish Kumar will be produced before a magistrate today for seeking police remand.
