Rahul Gandhi addresses Youth Congress rally in Delhi; Sonia, PM to attend

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi today inaugurated a massive rally of newly-elected office-bearers of the Youth Congress in the national capital.

The two-day convention, called 'Buniyaad', is being held on the outskirts of Delhi and is being attended by 8,000-odd elected members from across the country.

Addressing the rally, Mr Gandhi said, "Youth Congress reflects voices that are democratically-elected...I have not selected you, you are here on the basis of your own merit."

India's youth must help usher in change", he added. (Read: Highlights of Rahul Gandhi's speech)

The convention will also be addressed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi during the valedictory session on Tuesday.

The convention is the first major programme of the party after Rahul Gandhi started playing a larger role in the organisation in the wake of his mother's illness. A first of its kind in the history of the Youth Congress, the convention comes just ahead of assembly elections in five states, including the politically-crucial Uttar Pradesh, where Mr Gandhi is leading the campaign charge.
