Ahmedabad: On demonetisation anniversary today, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will participate in a candle-light vigil in Gujarat's Surat as part of the opposition parties' "Black Day" protest. His visit is also significant as the state will go for assembly elections next month.
Mr Gandhi will have informal meetings with the industry representatives and workers during the day and "he will have formal interaction with traders in Adajan area of the city in the evening," sources in the Congress said.
After the formal meeting, he will participate in a candle-light vigil on 'Black Day' near Vivekanand statue in Chowk Bazar area of Surat city, they said. His programme was confirmed by Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi.
While the government today celebrates one year of demonetisation as 'Anti-black money day', Opposition parties including the Congress are calling the demonetisation anniversary 'Black Day'.
Mr Gandhi took to Twitter early morning and tweeted that "demonetisation is a tragedy."
"We stand with millions of honest Indians, whose lives & livelihoods were destroyed by PM's thoughtless act," his tweet read.

In an effort to combat corruption and black money, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had suddenly banned high value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 a year ago today.
