Hyderabad: Rahul Gandhi is likely to spend the night at Osmania University when he visits Telangana next week as part of his tour to meet with farmers who are struggling with failed crops and seemingly insurmountable loans.

Mr Gandhi, 44, is the Congress vice-president and is expected to allocate two days to India's youngest state - Telangana - formed in June last year. Since then, it has confronted more than 700 farmer suicides.

Osmania University in Hyderabad had turned into the fulcrum of the often-volatile campaign for the region of Telanagana to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh as its own state.

In December 2010, in a surprise midnight announcement, the Congress-led Union government sanctioned the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The decision was seen as driven by Mr Gandhi's mother and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

But violent protests from the other two regions of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema had cornered the government into a prolonged dither. As a result, when Telangana voted for its first government last year, it showed the Congress the hand, and chose K Chandrasekhar Rao or KCR, the politician who had fronted the initiative for its statehood.

Mr Gandhi will visit Medak, the constituency of KCR, where at least 100 farmers have killed themselves since last year.

Mr Gandhi has been invited to Osmania University by a student's committee which says it wants to thank the Congress and him for making Telangana state a reality.

Mr Gandhi will tell the youth and farmers in the state that he stands with them as anger rises over rural distress and unemployment.
