His disqualification came following his conviction and jail sentence in a defamation case stemming from a 2019 remark implying PM Modi was a criminal. Mr Gandhi's Wayanad seat has also fell vacant after his disqualification. He has been granted bail and his sentence suspended for 30 days to let him appeal his conviction.
