Rahul Gandhi takes on Mayawati over usage of health funds

Lucknow: Targeting the Mayawati government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today alleged central funds under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) were not being properly utilized in Uttar Pradesh and said an application under the Right to Information Act (RTI) has been moved on the issue.

"An RTI has been moved regarding NRHM as proper utilisation of funds is not being done here. This is the reason I have come here," Rahul told reporters after spending nearly half an hour at the NRHM office.

Asked about the murder of two Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) of the Family Welfare Department in the state, Rahul said "that is the concern...there is misappropriation of funds here, so we wanted to understand where these funds are going and what's happening."

He also visited the house of B P Singh, the CMO who was murdered, and consoled the bereaved family. He also assured help from the party, party sources said.

Two separate applications seeking information on NRHM and Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSY) have been moved by UPPCC President Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

The Congress leader, who was on a day-long tour of his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi, paid a surprise visit to the NRHM office in Lucknow along with Joshi.

His visit assumes significance in the backdrop of the murder of two CMOs Vinod Kumar Arya and B P Singh and embezzlement in NRHM funds in Uttar Pradesh.

Investigation into Singh's murder by police and Special Task Force revealed large-scale bungling in the department after which FIRs were lodged and more than half a dozen persons, including a deputy CMO Yogendra Singh Sachan, were arrested.
