Amethi:
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday said he wanted global recognition for his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi.
"My aim is to get Amethi an identity of its own at the international level...food items and flowers exported from here can reach people in America," he said in Amethi at a public meeting after laying foundation of three new national highways at the cost of Rs 303 crore.
However, to make the goal possible there should be a good road network, he said.
"Not just in Amethi but also in the entire country... India cannot progress or move ahead without it (roads)," Mr Gandhi, who was on one-day visit to his constituency, said.
"I have been assured by the transport ministry that whatever works are required for construction of roads for achieving this aim would be done," he said, adding that Amethi is being connected with other parts of the country and world through road, rail and telephone.
The Congress leader said 520 km road has been constructed at the cost of Rs 420 crore in Amethi.
Referring to a proposed paper mill in Jagdispur area here, he said it will provide direct employment to 10,000 people but would also cause pollution.
Gandhi said runway of Fursatganj airport is being extended to Amethi and food processing units being set up here to facilitate export.
