However, sources in the Congress have told NDTV that the government is likely to accept her request for change.

Dinesh Trivedi to NDTV after his party attacked the hike in fares for rail passengers announced by him today. His party chief, Mamata Banerjee said today that she will not accept this hike in fares. I will try and convince her, Mr Trivedi responded.
Railways is not about politics. I will not kill the Railways for politics. I am very clear, my fundamentals are very clear, says Dinesh Trivedi. I respect my leader, her sentiments but that doesn't mean we cannot differ, he says.

First reactions from passengers: the fare hike is too nominal to really hurt passengers; they all said they would readily pay a little more for a safer journey.
The Prime Minister praised Mr Trivedi's railways budget, describing it as "forward-looking with emphasis on safety and modernisation."
