Rain in Mumbai: Thirsting for more

Mumbai:

The monsoon finally hit Mumbai on Wednesday, after a delay of two weeks. But only a few pockets of the city received rain. So if the rains don't lash the city soon, a very grim picture for Mumbai.

The six lakes that supply water to the city have only 11 per cent reserves left - water that with cuts will barely last three weeks.

So, Kanchan's family that gets only few hours of water even in normal times is now pushed to the edge.

"We fill every available vessel in the house. Sometimes the water we get is muddy and not even fit for consumption," said Kanchan Kharat, resident, Mumbai.

"There are 12 members in my family. It's becoming difficult to run the household because of water cuts. We change our daily schedules as per the water supply," she adds.

For many Mumbaikars, water problems are an everyday reality that have increased now with the 20 per cent water cut in place by the municipal corporation. The problem may become even worse if the monsoons continue to play truant.
