New Delhi: North India is likely to get a respite from the torrid heat today - rain and summer storms are on the cards. But the monsoon, which was to reach Kerala yesterday, is likely to play truant for a few more days.
The scorching heat wave continued down south, with Andhra Pradesh, the state worst hit witnessing over 40 more deaths. The total number of deaths in the state and neighbouring Telangana, has crossed 2,200. Besides, nearly 100 deaths were recorded in Odisha and over 70 in Gujarat. Even in Delhi, two persons died.
But Delhi, NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, northern Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh are in for a wet spell.
"Many parts of Northern India will experience thunderstorm in the next three days due to western disturbances," said BP Yadav, Director, Indian Meteorological disturbances.
The Met office has also predicted light rain and thundershowers at one or two places in south Odisha, besides Angul, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar districts. There will be strong and gusty surface winds along coastal Odisha.
Heat wave continued unabated in Rajasthan with parts of the desert state recording temperatures of 44 degrees Celsius and above. Kota remained the hottest place recording a maximum of 45 degree Celsius.
The monsoon was expected to hit the Kerala coast by May 30, but not weather officials say there is no hope of it before June 4-5.
