Lucknow:
Senior leaders of the Samajwadi Party (SP), including Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, were arrested for attacking a BSP candidate contesting for the Block head's post in Kunda. The arrests have now triggered a new political controversy in the state.
"I want to tell the DM and the SSP that they should not be so harsh on the Samajwadi Party. The DM will have to suffer after the retirement; they will have to go to jail after the complaint is filed," SP chief Mulayam Singh said.
These words were an open threat to Mayawati's men after they arrested Raja Bhaiya along with his cousin Akshay Pratap Singh, Samajwadi Party's chief whip in the Lok Sabha Shailendra Kumar and another MLA Vinod Kumar. The arrests happened early on Sunday morning.
Raja Bhaiyya, along with seven others, have been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
Yet another SP-BSP war of words seems to be brewing, with Mulayam accusing Chief Minister Mayawati of launching a witch hunt against his partymen.
"The Chief Minister wants to instill fear in SP and win the Block-level elections by force. Raja Bhaiyya was using fair means in the elections (Mukhyamantri humare sapa mein bhay paida kar ke chunav zabardusti se block pramukhi ke jeetna chahti hain., Raja bhaiya itna shareef aur sachchayi se chunav kar rahe the)," Mulayam said.
"Mayawati is baffled because she has faced numerous defeats in the past (Pichhle kai chunavon mein hamare ilaaqe se BSP ki haar ki wajah se Mayawati baukhla gayee hain)," Raja Bhaiyya said.
This is not the first time Raja Bhaiyya has been arrested in Mayawati's regime. In December 2002, he was charged under POTA and was jailed for more than 18 months.
Now, this time Mulayam plans to launch statewide protests from Monday.
