Jaipur: Mathur Commission's investigations into alleged corruption in land deals during the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government may have got stuck in legal tangle but the Congress government would not let this issue die so easily.
A cabinet sub-committee under the chairmanship of urban development housing minister Shanti Dhariwal would be holding a meeting on Thursday. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot had constituted this committee to look into the last six months' decision of BJP government led by former CM Vasundhara Raje.
While, the state government had already stopped Bhamasha scheme where Raje had marked `750 crore to be distributed as `1,500 to each rural poor woman by opening bank accounts for them; matters like land deals and government contracts were handed over to the cabinet sub-committee.
Some of the major issues included land given to the organisations which were either linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) or close to its ideology. The committee was also given the task of reviewing the matters of land conversion from agriculture to residential or commercial under the 90B, which was one of the biggest political issues during the last Assembly elections.
Congress had levelled corruption charges to the tune of `22,000 crore against Raje government before Assembly polls. Immediately after coming to power, Congress government had, set up an inquiry commission under justice (retd) NN Mathur, to probe land deals during BJP regime between 2004 and 2008.
However, Rajasthan high court had declared the Mathur commission illegal and the matter is currently pending in the Supreme Court.
