Jaipur:
An 18-year-old schoolgirl, raped allegedly by a teacher and owner of a private school in Rajasthan, has suffered brain damage after a botched abortion.
The teacher, Jagat Gujjar, and the school's director, Jagdish Yadav, have been arrested and are being interrogated, says senior police officer Vinit Kumar.
For two months, the Class 12 student was forced to stay back on the pretext of extra classes and raped repeatedly. A messy abortion that the two men allegedly forced her to go through when she got pregnant exposed the crime.
The police said the girl hadn't spoken about her torture until her condition deteriorated over the weekend and she was rushed to Jaipur, over 100 km away. She was admitted to the hospital's neurology ward on Sunday night.
Doctors treating her told her parents about the abortion.
"The girl was operated upon twice. No proper care was taken and because of lack of oxygen, her brain is damaged... It seems to be permanent damage," DS Meena, Superintendent of Jaipur's SMS Medical College, told NDTV.
As news of the schoolgirl's rape spread, angry parents protested outside the school, which has 400 students on its rolls, and demanded action against it. The school has been shut down indefinitely for now by the district administration.
The police are reportedly also investigating whether more students were assaulted by these men. It is a point that the Rajasthan Commission for Women has also raised.
The police have not been able to record the girl's statement because of her medical condition.
Officer Vinit Kumar said raids are also being carried out at the clinic some 50 km from Sikar where her abortion was carried out. "We are also seizing all medical records at the clinic where the abortion took place," he added.
