Superstar Rajinikanth has called DMK President M Karunanidhi - a day after the actor was discharged from hospital, and several hours after he phoned Mr Karunanidhi's arch rival, Jayalalithaa.
DMK sources say the actor consoled Mr Karunanidhi about being voted out as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. "You've seen many ups and downs. Don't worry about anything. Take care of your health," Rajinikanth is reported to have said.
Yesterday, the actor called new Chief Minister Jayalalithaa after being discharged from the hospital in Singapore where he was admitted late last month for respiratory problems. He congratulated the AIADMK chief on her massive victory in the state elections. He also told her he would return soon to India.
The actor's son-in-law, Dhanush tweeted yesterday: "Superstar discharged from hospital. He has recovered completely and taking rest. Soon national award celebrations :) god bless"
His family said the actor is on a vacation and will return to India in July.
Rajinikanth was shooting for the Tamil period film "Rana" on April 29 when he complained of exhaustion. Since then, he has been in and out of different hospitals. He travelled to Singapore on May 28 where he was admitted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
The superstar's political allegiance has been a headline since April, when Tamil Nadu voted for its new government. Television cameras that followed him into the polling booth seemed to capture his hand hovering near the two-leaves election symbol of Jayalalithaa's AIADMK. Contretemps - a few hours later, Rajinikanth was seated next to Mr Karunanidhi at a screening of the film Ponnar Shankar, based on a novel written by the DMK chief.
In 1996, Rajinikanth had famously declared "Even God can't save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa is elected to power". The DMK won that election. The superstar later made up with Jayalalithaa and she attended his daughter's wedding in Chennai in November 2004.
