New Delhi: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today called up Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and discussed with her the situation at NIT in Srinagar, which witnessed clashes between students and police.
"Spoke to J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti ji regarding situation in NIT, Srinagar. She has assured me to look into the issue and take immediate action (sic)," Singh tweeted.
The Home Minister's telephonic talk came after a minor clash broke out between police and some outstation students in the NIT campus.
Sources said some of the students wanted to go out of the campus which was prevented by the police, leading to the clashes.
Police had to resort to mild lathicharge to control the situation, they said.
Ms Mufti took over as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir yesterday.
On Sunday, the Home Minister had assured full security to students studying at NIT, Srinagar saying they should not worry about their safety in the wake of clashes between two groups after India's defeat against West Indies in the World T20 semifinal last Thursday.
Mr Singh had called up Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra and DGP K Rajendra Kumar and asked them to ensure proper security to the students studying there.
Two groups of students, one from Kashmir and one from other states, fought after local students burst crackers following India's lost in the match, leading the close down of the institute.
