Rajnath Singh playing second fiddle to Narendra Modi: Digvijaya Singh tells NDTV

New Delhi: The irreverent Digvijaya Singh has given a new spin to leadership dynamics in the BJP. Rajnath Singh, the party's president, he said today, is playing a sound political game and is likely to emerge "winner" were the BJP to form government at the Centre.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Digvijaya Singh said, with a smile, "Hats off to Rajnath who pitches himself as number 2. He was number 2 to Gadkari and became number one. Now he is pitching himself to Modi as number 2, and god forbid, if the BJP forms government, he will become number one."

Mr Singh, who had begun the morning with a series of controversial tweets attacking the BJP on the Bodhgaya blasts, said the opposition party was politicising the terror attack by slamming the Nitish Kumar government of which it was a part just a month ago.

"I am exposing the BJP's effort to politicise the issue," Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh also accused the BJP of using what he called "communal politics" in Uttar Pradesh and said the construction of a Ram temple was very much on the party's agenda.

He was referencing Rajnath singh's statement that the Ram temple is not an "election issue for the BJP, but a national issue." Mr Singh's statement came after Amit Shah, the BJP's in-charge of Uttar Pradesh for the 2014 polls, said that the BJP will build a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Ten years ago, Digvijaya Singh had banished himself into political exile after being trounced in the 2003 Madhya Pradesh elections by the BJP. As Uma Bharti replaced him as the state's chief minster Mr Singh had sworn that he would not contest elections for a decade. In this year's Assembly elections, he said, he will not contest from his home constituency Raghogarh and is in fact ready to contest from "the most difficult seat in Madhya Pradesh."

He also ruled out ever aspiring for the post of Chief Minister again.
