Elections were held for 18 Rajya Sabha seats in five states. The more interesting battles were:
Ram Jethmalani, BJP
There have been reports of rampant cross voting across parties. In Rajasthan, Ram Jethmalani, who had the backing of the BJP won a seat though several local leaders had their concerns. There was discontentment in BJP ranks over his candidature. The party had to lock up its 79 MLAs to stop them from cross-voting.
Anand Sharma, Congress
The senior Congress leader and Union minister Anand Sharma has won his Rajya Sabha seat from Rajasthan. Sharma belongs to Haryana, and has been politically active in Himachal Pradesh.
Vijay Mallya, Independent
Ram Vilas Paswan of the Lok Jan Shakti Party
Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan has won his Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar. The former Union Minister will heave a sigh of relief having been out in the cold ever since he lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2009.
