Salem, Tamil Nadu: As the probe into the heist of over Rs five crore RBI money from a moving train entered the second day today, Railway Protection Force said they "are on the job" to nab the criminals and recover the cash.
RPF Director General S K Bhagat told reporters that this was the "first time" such an incident has happened and that Railways are "on the job" and have been trying to identify where it could have taken place.
"I have come over here in connection with the theft of RBI soiled notes of Rs 5.78 crore. We are on the job. We have been trying to identify where the incident could have taken place."
"The notes were transported all the way from Salem to Egmore railway station. And this has been the usual process and this has been done all over the years," he said.
"This is the first time such incident has happened. We feel very very concerned about it. At the highest level, there is tremendous amount of concern," he said.
He said RPF would take all steps to nab the criminals and recover the cash. "It is very very important from the perspective of the government," he said.
The theft had come to light on Tuesday as four of the more than 200 wooden boxes stuffed with the cash was found ripped open when the train arrived in Chennai.
The government has already transferred the probe to CB-CID.
